It’s Time to Pass the Healthy Youth Act—Contact Your Rep. Today!

Ask Your State Rep. to Support the Healthy Youth Act!

The need for comprehensive sex education has never been more urgent. The #MeToo movement is a long overdue wake-up call that underscores that we must do more to give young people the information and skills needed to build healthy, respectful relationships.

LGBTQ youth are disproportionately impacted by STIs and sexual assault. We need LGBTQ-inclusive sex ed. We need the Healthy Youth Act!An Act Relative to Healthy Youth (H.3704) would do just that by ensuring that, when Massachusetts public schools teach sex ed, they use a comprehensive curriculum that is medically accurate and provides lessons on consent and healthy relationships.

It's particularly important that the House version of the Healthy Youth Act be LGBTQ-inclusive. Too often, LGBTQ people are left out of educational materials about healthy relationships, or are given information that is inaccurate or not applicable to them, leaving them at risk. We need to ensure that LGBTQ-inclusive language is included in the bill, as it is in the Senate version.

This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, take action and ask your state Representative to pass the Healthy Youth Act. The bill is currently before the Committee on Health Care Financing. We need them to vote it favorably out of committee as soon as possible.

Below is a sample email that you can use when contacting your state Representative. Feel free to add your personal reasons for supporting this bill to your email—your story, told in your own words, is more meaningful and makes a stronger impact than sending a general message of support.

Email Subject: Pass the Healthy Youth Act this Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Email Text:

Dear Representative [Last Name],

As your constituent, I urge you to address sexual violence among Massachusetts youth this Sexual Assault Awareness Month and pass An Act Relative to Healthy Youth (H. 3704).

In order to prevent sexual violence, young people need access to quality sex education that teaches consent and healthy relationships, especially LGBTQ youth. As more institutions hold abusers accountable in the #MeToo era, Massachusetts must do more to implement programs that help prevent sexual assault at its roots.

This bill, known as the Healthy Youth Act, is widely-supported, commonsense legislation that ensures when public schools in Massachusetts decide to teach sex ed, they provide a curriculum that is medically accurate and teaches about consent and healthy relationships.

This legislation would help ensure young people learn ways to protect themselves from pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS when they become sexually active. This bill is not a mandate, and continues to allow parents and guardians to take their children out of school-based sex ed.

The House version of the Healthy Youth Act also needs to be LGBTQ-inclusive. Too often, LGBTQ people are left out of educational materials about healthy relationships, or are given information that is inaccurate or not applicable to them, leaving them at risk. Please act to ensure that sex education curricula include information about and for LGBTQ youth as part of this bill.

This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I hope you will prioritize the passage of the Healthy Youth Act to ensure young people in the Commonwealth have all the information they need to stay safe and healthy. Massachusetts has a long history of being a national leader when it comes to health care access and education. In the #MeToo era, we must be a national leader once again and take meaningful action to prevent sexual assault and violence.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
