Boston, March 26, 2018 – MassEquality, Massachusetts’ leading LGBTQ grassroots advocacy organization, received $55k in donations at its annual Beacons of Light fundraising dinner and Icon Awards ceremony on Thursday, March 22, 2018. The money raised will allow the organization to expand its mission to advocate for full equality and justice throughout the state; educate communities on LGBTQ issues; and elect supportive candidates to state wide offices.

Like a guiding light in the night, Beacons of Light awards dinner shined a bright beam of inspiration on all of the attendees. Approximately 130 guests gathered in support of MassEquality’s mission, including legal champions, a broad range of community groups, and LGBTQ rights supporters.

Our Political Icon, Maura Healey, works tirelessly as Massachusetts Attorney General to fight for equal rights in the Commonwealth and in Washington DC. She gave an inspiring speech that brought the room to its feet.

The audience was deeply moved by the Community Icon award winner, The Network/La Red, a survivor-led, social justice organization that works to end partner abuse in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, SM, polyamorous, and queer communities.

Other notable attendees were Shane Cahill, Consul General of Ireland (who attended with his partner, Sean Henry); Josée-Anne Labrie, Public Information Officer of the Québec Government Office in Boston; Sam Chambers, Boston Citywide LGBTQ Liaison for Mayor Martin J. Walsh; Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim; and former Rep. Carl Sciortino (currently Executive Director of AIDS Action Committee).

The Boston Roller Derby brought the energy in the room to full blast as they skated around the room to collect donations after a heartwarming fundraising pitch by Board Member Leela Strong.
