MassEquality Statement on Rhode Island Speaker Gordon Fox’s Decision To Back Civil Union Bill Instead of Marriage

BOSTON, April 27, 2011— Statement by MassEquality Executive Director Kara Suffredini on Rhode Island Speaker Gordon Fox’s Decision To Back Civil Union Bill Instead of Marriage:

“It’s 2011, not 1999. Rhode Island families deserve nothing less than full marriage equality. Civil unions are a poor substitute for marriage for Rhode Island’s gay and lesbian couples and their children. Rhode Island Speaker Gordon Fox’s pursuit of civil unions is a pursuit of second class citizenship. As has already been proven in Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and New Jersey, civil unions are neither fair nor equal.”
