Icon Awards 2014
Supporting Real Change for LGBTQ People.
The Icon Awards provides an opportunity for the MassEquality board, staff, supporters, political figures, and partners to honor and celebrate the exceptional leadership, voice, and advocacy of individuals and organizations who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to bettering the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people and allies in the Commonwealth.
Now in its third year, the 2014 MassEquality Icon Awards will also include a celebration of the 10th anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts. In 2004, once the Goodridge decision made same sex marriage possible, MassEquality was the coalition that formed to successfully defend the decision in the Legislature. MassEquality was pivotal in commandeering a grassroots effort of thousands that called for an end to same sex discrimination in marriage. The resulting landmark victory paved the way for the legalization of same-sex marriage in sixteen states and the District of Columbia, as well as the striking down of DOMA.
Though the fight for marriage equality has been won in Massachusetts, there is still more work to be done with regards to LGBTQ seniors, bullying in our schools, immigration, transgender equality and many other issues. The Icon Awards seek to honor those who've been instrumental and visionary in the fight for LGBTQ rights.
The Icon Awards will have four honorees this year. These honorees have gone above and beyond to be advocates for the LGBTQ community and have taken great strides to make immeasurable changes in the movement.
In the coming weeks, the honorees will be unveiled.
