State lawmakers are expected to vote next week on repealing a 1913 law that prevents out-of-state gay and lesbian couples from getting married in Massachusetts, reigniting a divisive debate on an issue that has stirred passions and put the state in the national spotlight.

Wilkerson predicts Senate vote on Tuesday

The state legislature will likely take up a bill to repeal the 1913 law that prevents non-resident same-sex couples from marrying before the close of the legislative session at the end of this month.

Sen. Dianne Wilkerson (D-Boston), the champion of the legislation in the Senate, said she expects the repeal bill to come up for a vote in the Senate on Tuesday. She declined to say what she expected the vote count to be, but said she was optimistic the repeal bill would pass.

MassEquality has long been praised for its political muscle, but last month the New England Direct Marketing Association (NEDMA) honored the organization for its media savvy. NEDMA gave MassEquality's "It's Wrong to Vote on Rights" television campaign first prize in its broadcast media category at the organization's annual awards show, held June 11 at the Roxy in Boston.

MassEquality announced on Tuesday, June 24 that it has received a new challenge grant from the Human Rights Campaign to support work in Massachusetts and New England. The Human Rights Campaign has pledged to match individual donations to MassEquality, dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000, through September 30.

To kick off the 2008 Election Season, MassEquality is holding a series of Summer Campaign Trainings for activists looking to get involved with campaigns for pro-equality candidates. These five-hour workshops will teach participants all the campaign basics they need to be an effective volunteer or organizer on a local legislative campaign -- a great intro experience for first-time campaign volunteers, as well as a good refresher for more experienced campaigners.
