Macy Gray is on her way to Boston.

On Sept. 30, Gray says she will be singing for equal rights as she headlines MassEquality’s benefit at the Wilbur Theatre.

Expect to see a “real” show with a lot of “raw” elements, Gray said. “I’m very passionate about my country and I want to do anything I can to make it better,” she said, later explaining that it was an easy choice to say yes to MassEquality when they approachd her about a Boston performance.

It’s hard to mistake Macy Gray. There’s the recognizable rasp of her neo-soul vocals, those trademark tresses (like her voice, that hair has serious volume), and her frequently quirky fashion choices — like the time she showed up to an MTV VMA ceremony in a dress emblazed with the self-promotional message “Buy My Album.” (Subtlety is perhaps not her strong suit.) Whether you dig her music or not, there's no doubt she’s utterly original.

And yet, despite her successes, the 43-year-old singer and actress still proudly identifies herself as a misfit -- which, she says, might be why her music attracts members of the LGBT community.
